Information about exhibition will be forthcoming. This has been slower than anticipated but I will continue to update here.

TEXTILE MAIL ART PROJECT

THEME: Artists from around the world are invited to submit a piece of original artwork based upon the theme of textiles. Media/Techniques: Let Your Imagination Run Wild through your fabric stash, your ribbons, yarns, felting material, embroidered, painted, or fiber-based mixed media, etc.

SIZE: Free, but postcard size suggested.
There will be no jury, no fees and no return of artwork.
Submissions must be original work created by you.

ON THE BACK OF YOUR WORK: Your name, full mailing address, title of artwork, medium and email address, (website if you have one).

EXHIBITION: I'm trying to work out venues for free public viewing, and the completed call may become a "traveling trunk" show for textile groups. If you know of a group (or a quilt club, other textile groups) that might be interested, let me know and I'll start planning an itinerary. The shows will be viewed by the general public which will include children.

DOCUMENTATION: I will respond to each piece and will provide documentation to all participants shortly after deadline. All received postcards will be published on the blog:

Auf der suche nach dem roten faden!

Mixed media assemblage in three pieces, from Frieder Speck.

He explained to me that "Der rote Faden" is in german an special expression for something that leads through a text or life or work. If you lost the "roten Faden" its hard to follow a speech or a text cause there is nothing that keeps it together. If you forget while you are speaking what you wanted to say you "verlierst den Faden".

Its nice if you let it fly like a dragon on a "Faden", if you loose the "Faden" it will fade to somebody else who finds the "roten Faden".

I'm impressed by the fact that Frieder ventured into an unknown territory for him, incorporating textiles in his work. Yes, very glad you did not sew your fingers together on the machine, Frieder!

June's textile cards make use of the selvedge edge of the fabric... that little strip on the edge that gets cut off and thrown away nine times out of ten! It's interesting to see this extra information being used in such a creative and beautiful way. Thank you June for these lovely cards!

These are from a series : 'Flood Art' - the photographs were damaged by the January flood waters. A friend rescued them and Christine has been embellishing and sending them out as Mail Art in association with the group from mailart365.blogspot.com.
Take a few minutes to look over the works on that site. They are a fascinating and diverse group of artists working on a noble project: creating and sending mail art every day. Several of these artists have submitted works here as well.

Surprise! ... other than being a little rumpled from the journey there was no apparent damage (except to the bag it arrived in... it looked as if a cat had tried to gnaw into it).

SECURITY BLANKET

Nine security paper patterns were cut into 3/4" patchwork squares, machine stitched with vintage cotton thread, then bound with a tenth security pattern paper envelope. Mounted on 4" x 6" cardstock (postcard size), and mailed naked. Arrived in beautifully franked / pristine condition with wonderful vintage Folk Art USA Quilt themed postage.

Advancing towards each other

Tina sent this lovely textual textile triptych. Her work arrived in the mailbox on my midwest front porch in absolutely pristine condition, despite having been posted bare naked. As if the Kwan Yin of Mail Art protected them on their voyage. Exhibiting definite elements of visual poetry, these works are meticulously crafted. Her technique is outstanding: It takes steady hand-eye coordination to select, compose, and sew pieces like this -- pieces that include a hefty amount of antique and vintage papers. Not to mention fierce composure to allow them to wing their way unprotected by an envelope!
